I love birds, and I find them truly inspiring. I’ve always been intrigued by their vivid colours, interesting shapes, unique sounds and fascinating lives.
Found in savanna habitats, often near water, red throated bee-eaters live in small groups that perch conspicuously. These brightly coloured birds are monogamous and have one of the most complex social systems. They live in large colonies of over 100 birds, but can reach 200 birds if conditions are favourable. Bee-eaters of both sexes alternate between being breeders and helpers in their clan. Each bird lives in an extended family with members of four overlapping generations. They appear to recognize parents, siblings, offspring, friends, and nesting neighbours, likely from voice recognition.
