The great blue heron with its subtle blue-grey plumage often stands motionless as it scans for prey, or wades belly deep with long, deliberate steps. They weigh only 5 to 6 pounds due to their hollow bones—a feature all birds share. These beautiful birds have specialized feathers on their chest that continually grow, fray, and produce a powdery substance. They comb this powder down with a fringed claw on their middle toes, using the down like a washcloth to remove fish slime and other oils from their feathers as they preen. The great blue heron can be found near most bodies of water throughout North America, from southern Alaska, across central Canada to Nova Scotia, south to parts of the Caribbean and northern Mexico.
