This long-haired, gentle, and highly intelligent primate is one of our closest relatives in the wild. The name orangutan means "man of the forest" in the Malay language. In the rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia in which they reside, orangutans live solitary existences.
They are uniquely arboreal—living their lives quietly up in the trees away from predators, and only descending to the forest floor when they must. Deforestation, hunting, and pet trade have placed these amazing creatures in danger of extinction. On average, 2,000 to 3,000 orangutans are killed every year, and at this rate of loss, they could be extinct in the wild in less than 50 years.
