In rural and urban areas, humans and white storks can live in harmony in close proximity. In Spring, male storks return to breeding grounds, arriving a few days before females and immediately busy themselves enlarging the nest used the previous year. To greet their mate arriving at the nest, they make a loud rhythmic clattering noise with their bill. In some cultures the presence of the white stork nests is seen as a sign of good luck, while in other cultures its arrival heralded the arrival of a new baby. With its graceful flight and noble presence, the white stork continues to capture the imaginations of people around the world. They are frequently found in folklore, representing peace, happiness, fertility, and birth.
