We are closely related, sharing 98.3% of our genetic code. Gorillas are charismatic, highly intelligent animals that often surprise us with behaviours and emotions so similar to our human experience. A few gorillas in captivity have used sign language in sophisticated ways, with sign phrase lengths of over 8 signs, and consistent grammatical structure.

They can laugh, grieve, develop strong family bonds, make and use tools, and think about the past and the future. But what does the future hold for these magnificent creatures? Gorillas have suffered greatly from destruction of their forest habitat, poaching, and over-collection by zoos and research institutions. The commercial trade in bushmeat, which occurs throughout west and central Africa, is the biggest threat to gorillas today.
