During the mating season courtship behaviour, penguins stretch their bodies tall—even leaning toward their partner—relying on cues from the other bird. These aquatic flightless birds exhibit this type of behaviour frequently, utilizing this posture to send messages to the others. Throughout their relationships, which can last a lifetime, partners continue to bow and shake their heads at one another to reinforce their bond. Penguins are highly social animals, and live in large groups called colonies that may include up to one million individuals. The individuals often huddle together for protection against cold weather and predators.
