Alpacas greet each other with their noses. That’s the only exposed part of their faces not covered by their shaggy hair. They are social, gentle, and docile animals, and only thrive if they live with at least one other alpaca. They have a variety of vocalizations, some of which have multiple meanings. Alpacas are believed to have been domesticated and selectively bred from their wild ancestors. They are raised for their soft and luxurious fleece. Each shearing produces roughly five to ten pounds of fleece per year. This fleece, often compared to cashmere, can be turned into a wide array of products from yarn and apparel to tapestries and blankets. The fleece itself is recognized globally for its fineness, softness, light weight, durability, excellent thermal qualities, and lustre.
